Land Ho!!

We have been learning about Christopher Columbus this week in anticipation of the Columbus Day holiday that is quickly approaching! (No, we are not out of school on Monday!)
We have read about him, discussed what we thought was the most interesting parts of the journey Columbus made over 600 years ago, and made a version of  'ol Christopher himself with one of his famous ships.  Lot's more learning to go Thursday and Friday as we get a few more details about this historical event and write about Columbus and how he had an impact on us!

Proud to be an American

Last week, we talked about September 11, 2001.  We talked about the good parts of 9/11.  There were no good parts you say?  Well we discussed how, even though our country was experiencing one of the worst things that could happen, our country pulled together and helped any way they could.  We discussed how we are a strong country and how we won't let anybody take away our freedom!

And some of us painted flags as a reward for turning in their weekly homework completely finished!

We also read a book written by a first grade class, September 12th.

*I have been trying to share this video with all of you for over a week and just could not get it to upload until NOW!!!

POPSICLES!!!

Each time we leave our classroom, I use the iPad app "Name Selector" to secretly choose a student.  Then I watch that particular student's behavior as we travel to our destination.  If that one person follows the hallway or lunchroom rules, the whole class earns a letter for whatever prize they have as the class goal.  We've already had popcorn and today was POPSICLES!!  (Sugar-free:)

If they do earn a letter, I tell them who I was watching and we ALL tell them thank you for having such good behavior and earning us a letter.  If, for some reason, that secret person's behavior is not as good as it should be, I do not tell them the secret person's name!
Our hallway and lunchroom behavior is the BEST in the whole school!!!

They've decided to set a "pizza snack" as our next goal.  They've already earned 2 letters!

Tomorrow's Friday and our schedule is JAM PACKED!! Can't wait!

Dogs, Dogs,Dogs!!

Great visit from J.B. Pennington's Resource Officer and his partner!

Since we have been reading about dogs these past couple of weeks, we invited a dog to show us what her job is in our county.  We learned about where she came from, her care, and how she is trained to find illegal drugs in our county.  She gave us a demonstration and we quickly saw that she knew what she was doing!!

3 States of Matter, YUM!

We have been learning in science about the three states of matter.  We are working on a class project that will show examples of each state of matter.  We loved our experiment on Friday!! We took a liquid, surrounded it with a cold gas, and turned it into a solid!  And then we ate it!

Took about 5 - 10 minutes worth of shaking the bag with the ice cream mixture.

And then we had a delicious treat!!
